The AIADMK and DMK have already started receiving applications from cadre. In this backdrop, the DMK has been holding district-level meetings to devise strategy to secure maximum seats. As part of such an exercise, members of the Tiruchy district unit of DMK converged for a meeting organised by the district secretary and former minister KN Nehru.

The ex-minister in his address appealed to party men to start work in their respective areas for the local body election and urged the friendly parties to work hand in hand. Nehru appealed to work unitedly with an ultimate aim of winning all the seats in the district. He also advised the workers to make a list of polling booth agents. He, while seeking the full support of the youth wing, said the party workers should verify the voters list and get the complete details of the electorate in each and every ward.

District Secretaries Kaduvetti N Thiagarajan (North) and M Anbalagan (Urban) and others were present. Functionaries from Congress, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League participated and gave a few suggestions. It may be recalled that the new president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee met the DMK leader M Karunanidhi recently at the latter’s Gopalapuram residence a few days ago. On the same day, the Tamil Maanila Congress GK Vasan met the DMK treasurer MK Stalin at a private function in Madurai.

This triggered a lot of speculations in the political circles that the Dravidian giant may take Vasan’s party on board for the civic body polls. However, some critics said that the move may affect DMK’s ties with Congress. In a veiled manner, adding to strength to this view, the TNCC chief also said that his party would make its stand clear after the DMK’s announcement on local body elections.
