Sources said, R Deepika of Akur, Appurajapuram, was pursuing her second year at a college in Poompuhar in Nagapattinam district. It is said on September 19, Deepika who went out of the house after attending to a phone call, did not return. Relatives searched for her in vain.Â
However, the next day, Deepika’s body was found in a canal in her village with several injury marks. On information, Porayar police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. The police found her mobile phone, tracked the call history and secured Arasan (21) of Sirkazhi and Mohan (20) of Kandanthakudi. During interrogation, the two confessed to the crime. According to the confession by Arasan, who is the elder brother of Deepika’s friend and a final year student of MA in a college in Nagapattinam, he was in love with Deepika. It is said, Deepika had spurned his love. The information about the betrothal of Deepika to another man angered Arasan who wanted to eliminate her as he could not accept her being married to another man.Â
On September 19, Arasan met Deepika and warned her not to marry the man of her parent’s choice. This lead to an argument between the two and in a fit of rage, Arasan grabbed a spade and attacked her. Deepika fell down unconscious in a pool of blood. On realising that she was dead, Arasan called up his friend Mohan with whose help he dumped the body in the canal. Arasan and Mohan were arrested and sent to the Central prison in Tiruchy after being produced before the local court.Â
