City to have female Mayor after 40 years
After a gap of four decades, a woman will be elected as the mayor of Chennai Corporation in the upcoming local body elections. A gazette notification from the state government has reserved the mayor posts for Chennai, Coimbatore, Vellore, Dindigul, Thanjavur and Salem municipal corporations for women.

The present tenure of 12 municipal corporations, 123 municipalities, 529 town panchayats, 385 panchayat unions and 12, 524 village panchayats ends on October 24. Among the municipalities Tambaram, Pallavaram, Pammal, Anakaputhur, Sembakkam and Kanchipuram come under the general category, while 51 other municipalities including Chengalpattu and Madurantakam have been reserved for women (general). Maraimalainagar on the outskirts of Chennai, Tiruverkadu in Tiruvallur district and Arakonam in Vellore district come under the ST (general) category.
Among town panchayats, 235 are reserved for SC (general) including Mammallapuram and Tiruporur, both near Chennai. Mangadu, Guduvancherry, Chitlapakkam, Perungaluthur and Peerkankaranai town panchayats in and around Chennai will have women presidents.Â
Ranipet, Sirkazhi, Valparai, Thiruthuraipoondi, Sankarankoil, Uthagamandalam, Pernampet, Coonoor and Perumbalur municipalities are earmarked for SC (women) while Gudalur in the Nilgiris is reserved ST (women).Â
With poll related work gathering momentum, State Election Commission (SEC) officials said “supplementary electoral rolls, based on the main electoral rolls released by the Central Election Commission on April 29 , would be readied before Sept 29. Corrections would be included till the last date of filing nominations.
