Ayanavaram temple tank to be rejuvenated
A city-based NGO has taken upon itself the challenging task of restoring the 220-year-old tank of the Kasi Viswanathar Temple in Ayanavaram. If The Serene Chennai has it way, the tank of hoary past will sport a new look with brimming water, which doubles as a rainwater harvesting structure in the area.

“Last Saturday, we had an expert visiting the tank to study the structure. According to him, the tank is filled with sand and it could be deeper than what it is,” says Gowri Shankar, an IT employee and founder of The Serene Chennai.
He further adds, “There was water in the tank till a decade ago that was available throughout the year. According to the residents, the reason for the missing water now could the innumerable bore wells around the tank.”
However, the expert disagrees. “According to him, the tanks are interconnected and since it is a 200 years old structure, the ruler would have thought about it. The expert has asked for a map to check if there is any tunnel running through it.”
Once everything is clear, they will go ahead with the cleaning of the tank. “We’d need all the permissions from the Corporation to remove the sand. However, they have been supportive in our previous projects.”
The NGO, along with Environmental Foundation of India (EFI) had earlier taken an initiative to remove the muck from a pond near Ellai Amman Koil in West Mambalam.
“We want people from the neighbourhood to participate in the clean-up. We have already approached many apartment complexes around the temple. Residents who regularly visit the temple are happy to help.”
There are several temple tanks in the city that are in a state of neglect and these tanks were used to conserve water.
“We also plan to set up a rain water harvesting structure in the tank.”
The Serene Chennai mostly comprises of IT professionals and students and organise events during the weekends
