11 places to get Amma marriage halls

After free gold for ‘thaali’ and cash assistance for marriage, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa unveiled yet another scheme under brand ‘Amma’ to benefit the poor in conducting marriages. She announced the construction of ‘Amma’ marriage halls at 11 places, including six in Chennai at a cost of Rs 83 crore on Saturday.

The “Amma Kalayana Mandapams” (Amma marriage halls) would have facilities on a par with private marriage halls.
“Poor people have to pay high rents to private halls for conducting functions like wedding. Therefore, to benefit them, I have directed construction of ‘Amma marriage halls’,” she said in a statement, apparently hinting that these halls would be let out at lower rentals.
The announced facilities to be built by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board and Cooperative Housing societies, could be booked online and the government would create necessary facilities for the same. That the government has chosen the housing board instead of civic bodies to implement the project should come as a relief, considering that the community halls run by the civic bodies do not seem to have much patronage.
    50,000 houses
Apart from this, Jayalalithaa announced the construction of 50,000 houses through Slum Clearance Board at a total cost of Rs 1,800 crore. As part of its contribution, the state government would offer a subsidy of Rs 945 crore to construct 45,000 houses at the rate of Rs 2.1 lakh to each unit. The Chief Minister said that she had ordered the construction of another 2,000 low, middle and high income groups tenements by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board during the current fiscal.
Each LIG flat, which will have a carpet area of 645 sqft, will have a hall, two bed-rooms and a kitchen. It will cost less than Rs 20 lakh, while MIG flat of 807 sq ft will be below Rs 30 lakh.
She also announced the construction of 908 tenements to be rented out to government employees, 1,266 for sale to public at a cost of Rs 401 crore.
Under the self-financing scheme, 873 tenements will be built in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Thanjavur and Tirunelveli districts.
