Survey of recovery process in flood-hit areas from October

Dr Jonas Joerin said that they had started the project in response to the Chennai floods in December last year and that they wanted to assess the recovery outcomes a year after the deluge. “We are planning a household survey in Mylapore and Velachery and also interview stakeholders, including officials, representatives of residents’ associations and NGOs.”. 

Dr Joerin expressed the hope that the study could suggest ways to minimise damage during such disasters. 

Dr Krishnamurthy, HoD, Applied Geology, University of Madras, and the co-researcher for the project, said that the project was aimed at involving local communities in disaster preparedness activities. “We wanted to select one area which has witnessed development long time ago and another one that developed recently for our study. This made us select Mylapore, an area developed several decades ago and Velachery, which developed in the recent past,” he explained.
