Infra boost proof of 5 yrs’ performance, says Mayor

The last meeting of the Greater Chennai Corporation Council (GCCC) on Saturday was an occasion to take stock of Mayor Saidai Duraisamy’s achievements in terms of projects initiated and several of them completed. The GCC has, in the last five years, undertaken construction of new bridges and renovation work, the mayor pointing out that a total of five flyovers had been constructed at a cost of Rs 65.45 crore, and three subways for Rs 30.89 crore. “Further, the GCC built 10 small bridges at a cost of Rs 10.95 crore, with renovation work having been undertaken on 19 bridges at a cost of Rs 7.66 crore. The total cost of these projects was Rs. 114.95 crore while work on six bridges is under way at a cost of Rs 5.98 crore,” the mayor added. 

To protect people living near water bodies, low-lying areas and slum areas, from malaria, the chief minister had ordered the distribution of free mosquito nets. “Accordingly, a total of 5.9 lakh nets have  been distributed to 9.87 crore people,” Duraisamy said. To control the breeding of mosquitoes, the GCC’s park department provided people with 5 lakh nochi plants at a cost of Rs 35 lakh. “Under the CM’s direction, such plants were also provided to schools, hospitals, residents’ welfare associations and others,” he said. 

To prevent soil erosion, palm seeds were planted along the water bodies. “A total of 6.5 lakh palm seeds were planted so far at a cost of Rs 21 lakhs,” he said. 

A total of 2,666 bitumen roads were laid in the ninth zone in the last five years at a cost of Rs 413.16 crore. “There are 127 cement concrete roads that were built at the estimated cost of Rs. 16.20 crore and 256 bitumen roads are under construction,” he pointed out. In totality, 3,178 road works were undertaken at the cost of Rs 481.14 crore. 

Likewise, Amma canteens, Amma drinking water, establishing parks and play grounds, storm water drainage works, anganwadis and construction of government offices were also taken up.
