    Teachers, students honoured on Institute of Orthopaedics Day

    One of the premier facilities in the public health space, the Institute of Orthopaedics at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital celebrated its Institute Day by honouring faculty and meritorious students on Friday.

    State Minister for Health C Vijaya Bhaskar and Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan joined the celebra tions at the facility, which was upgraded as an institute in 2009 on September 9. The Health Minister on the occasion, highlighted some of the achievements of the AIADMK government in the last few years. He said, “Tamil Nadu is now leading by example in extending healthcare and medical facilities to the people. Medical colleges have been started in other districts, while in Karur and Pudukottai work is under-way for starting medical institutions.” He added that health and sanitation have also been given a boost through increased investment.

    Talking to DTNext Dr Deen Muhammad Ismail, director of the Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, RGGGH, said that the event was an opportunity to highlight the achievements over the last few years. “We take this opportunity to honour past teachers at the institute, every year. Under graduate and post graduate students, who have done extremely well in the gold medal examinations conducted in January and February every year are also awarded medals on this occasion,” he said. Dr Ismail added that the institute has made remarkable achievements in a matter of years. “Some of them include a paediatric orthopaedic ward, sports clinic and a 24-hour club foot clinic held once a week. In the past two years, we have also added a minimally invasive operation theatre where bloodless surgeries are performed and a separate out-patient department for X Ray has also been started to strengthen treatment facilities for ortho patients,” he said.
