Major organs of youth harvested, airlifted

MS Manikandan of Thoppukulam in Thanjavur had met with an accident on Wednesday and was rushed to Thanjavur Medical College hospital where he was admitted in the ICU. Later, in the CT scan it was found that Manikandan sustained severe brain stem cell injury. However, he was declared brain dead on Wednesday itself. 

His mother Nirmala and sister Jagadeeswari, a para medical staff in TMC hospital volunteered the organ donation. Manikandan’s major organs like heart, valves, lungs, liver, kidneys and eyes were retrieved at Cethar Hospitals on Thursday. The liver was used for a patient at Cethar hospital while the heart and lung was harvested by Fortis Malar Hospitals Chennai for a patient waiting at their hospital for a cardiac transplant. The kidneys were sent to Frontline Hospital, Tiruchy. Both the eyes were taken by AG Eye Hospital Tiruchy. The organs to be airlifted to Chennai were taken by green corridor to the airport with the support of a police team led by Asst Commissioner of Police Kabilan.
