Conveying this to newspersons on the sidelines of an urgent state council meeting of the committee held here on Tuesday, Pandian said the struggle was being organised to get water at least for a single crop of samba in the delta region. The other demands that would be highlighted are the retrieval of Tamil Nadu’s rights in the Mullaiperiyar and Palar rivers and waiver of loans obtained by farmers from all cooperative and commercial banks.
“So far, 90 per cent of the farming associations have extended their support to the bandh,” Pandian claimed. Meanwhile, the traders’ associations have also come forward to express their solidarity with the committee by closing the shops on August 30, he said. Letters seeking support for the bandh have been sent to transport operators, lorry operators associations among others, he said.
