The employee, Mohit Pathak, a native of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, was a hockey player and joined the department under sports quota.
He and couple of hockey players were staying in the IT staff quarters at Thirumangalam area in the city, when some unidentified persons knocked at his door.
When Mohit opened the doors, the assailants threw acid at him and fled the scene.
Mohit suffered about 40 per cent burns on his face, stomach and back, police said, adding, he was rushed to a hospital where his condition was said to be out of danger.
Police said the motive behind the acid attack was being probed and they were on the look out for the assailants.
