Dean of GRH Vairamuthuraja, on Thursday said at present there were only three doctors in the department but they had performed 1,367 surgeries in the last 18 months.

“This is such a difficult task and Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital stands first in the state in the total number of surgeries performed by the Vascular Surgery Department,’ Vairamuthuraja said.

Recently, the department carried out three complex surgeries within a week. One of the three patients, a 52-year-old man from Madurai had been diagnosed with abdominal aortic aneurysm (swelling of abdominal aorta).

It was found out that the swelling had stopped blood supply to his stomach, liver, intestines, kidneys and to both the legs.

In the surgery that followed, the aneurysmal swelling was completely removed and replaced by synthetic graft. In this process blood supply to both the legs were re-established. Similarly, another 57-year-old patient from Karaikudi who was suffering from a non-healing ulcer of right leg for six months had been diagnosed with aortic disease, Vairamuthuraja said.

The abdominal aorta was completely blocked including the blood supply to both limbs and kidneys. The surgery was carried out successfully using a synthetic graft. Similar surgery was also performed on a 28-year-old man who had an aortic block due to smoking claimed the Dean.

Some of the major surgeries performed by the department include aortic bypass, endovascular procedures in the form of angioplasties and stenting, endovenous radio frequency ablation procedure for varicose veins All these procedures were being carried out successfully by the well-skilled team of doctors.

Patients from all the nine southern districts were being treated at the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital mainly because of the high-end equipment provided under the CM Comprehensive Health Insurance scheme.
