Road map for widening of NH 45

The Chennai office of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to convert the 45 km stretch from Chennai to Mahindra City (Paranur) into a 8-lane highway, and the remaining distance from Paranur to Tindivanam to a 6-lane highway, according to official sources. The total distance is 121 km.

Stating that the proposal has been sent to New Delhi headquarters, officials told DTNext, “The cost would be worked out once sanction is received as it includes the amount for land acquisition. Land owners going to court is a perennial issue that NHAI faces,” officials added.

The 50 kilometre Chennai – Chengalpet stretch has three road overbridges (ROBs) across the railway tracks in various stages of construction. State highways department officials said, “Completion of ROBs would have ensured that traffic would move quickly to other side of the tracks. Presently, closure of railway crossings results in congestion which extends onto NH 45 due to a telescopic effect.” Senior government officials said, “Frequent announcements on road projects was to pressurise NHAI to give permission for pending projects.”

While the ROB adjacent to Perungalathur railway station has not progressed beyond pillars being constructed, ROBs between Vandalur and Urapakkam and another one at Singaperumalkoil face different problems. While the former is yet to be completed, the latter has the bridge portion completed by the railways. But there are no approach roads and the knee high grass on both sides reveals long time pendency.

However, NHAI officials said they were on the job.
