Jayalalithaa’s booster shot to healthcare sector across State

In a major boost to the healthcare sector, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa launched several facilities across the state, which also included the resumption of production of anti-venom for snake bite at the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research (KIPMR) in Guindy.

As far as the King Institute is concerned, the state government has provided facilities worth over Rs 16 crore to help resume anti-venom production at the premier research and antidote manufacturing facility. The facilities included buildings and equipment for anti-venom production, quality control division and blood testing at the Guindy institute. Anti-venom production remained suspended at the facility since 2000, a government release said, calling the research centre was one of the best institution in the country. 

“Till 2000 it was producing anti-venom, however, for want of various infrastructure it was stopped then. With this upgrade, we are not only providing good buildings, but also sterilized facility in tune with good industrial standards that will help resume anti-venom production,” a senior government officer in the know of things told DTNext. 

Meanwhile, the CM also launched several other facilities across the state, which included a Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT-CT) equipment at the Government Multi Super Speciality hospital at Omandurar Estate. The equipment was installed at a cost of Rs 4.80 crore. 

She also declared open buildings worth Rs 70.69 crore for the health sector, 14 PHCs, Rs 2 crore worth CT Scan machine at Ariyalur GH.

The statement said the government led by Jayalalithaa has been implementing various projects to ensure that poor people get high quality healthcare facilities without any hassle. According to the government communique, Rs 968 crore worth equipment have been provided to government hospitals during the last five years.

She also inaugurated various other facilities, including quarters at Chengalpattu Medical College (Rs 6.89 crore) and burns wards at various district hospitals set up at a cost of Rs 21.57 crore. 

Sportspersons honoured 

During the day, the Chief Minister also honoured five sports persons, including a differently-abled woman, with cash incentives to the tune of Rs 1.45 crore for winning laurels in various sports meets. An official statement here said, the Chief Minister presented a cheque for Rs 25 lakh to K Jenitha Anto of Tiruchirappalli for winning the title in the International chess tournament for the differently abled held in Serbia last month. It said she had won the title for the fourth time. 

Jayalalithaa also presented cash incentives to the tune of Rs 1,20 crore to four sportspersons for winning medals in the World School Athletics Championship held in Turkey last month.
