Criminals are targeting lonely passengers on highways and robbing passengers at knifepoint. Just three days after the serial chain- snatching incident at Mylapore, a four- member armed gang went on a robbery spree on Wednesday night at the Chennai Bypass service road from Kundrathur to Valasaravakkam, robbing at least 15 people of their valuables. 
Sources told DTNext the starting point for the crime was at Taraipakkam, near Kundrathur on the Service Road. Arun Kumar and wife Kavitha, residents of the same area, returning home on a two-wheeler, were intercepted by a gang of four on two bikes. Threatening the couple at knife point they took away Rs 3,000, a two sovereign gold chain and mobile phones. This was at 11.30 pm. 
Moving towards Valasaravakkam on the service road the gang targetted passers-by on the road A youth at Periyapanichery was the next target. They snatched his valuables and took away his two-wheeler. Emboldened by their success, the knife-wielding gang stopped every person on the road and took away whatever money they were carrying. 
The daring robberies appear to have ended after 1 am. Most of the victims, who lost cash ranging between Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000, were reportedly turned away by the respective police stations, with police asking them to come on Thursday to lodge a complaint.  “Many have lost Rs. 1000 or Rs. 500. Some of them called up the control room and complained about the robbers,” a city police official confirmed. The hunt for the gang is on.
