The deceased, identified as Maria Anthony Ignatius Pradeep who was working at a shipping company in Thoothukudi, was on his way home on Wednesday night, when a gang intercepted him near St Anthony’s Church. When he tried to escape they hacked him. In the incident, Pradeep had sustained injuries in more than 15 places in his body and died on the spot. Police reached the spot after being alerted by onlookers. His body was sent for post-mortem. In the investigation, the Thoothukudi Central Police found that Pradeep on Wednesday afternoon had a tiff with Darwin, also from Thoothukudi, when they were having lunch together at a hotel. When the fight turned physical, the hotel staff had to intervene and separate them. Suspecting that Darwin could be behind the murder, police arrested him and two of his friends. Further investigation is on to ascertain the role of his friends in the murder.
