IIT-M offers low-cost VR-based ‘kiss of life’

A team of students headed by Dr M Manivannan at the applied mechanics department of the IIT Madras has come up with a low-cost indigenous Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) system combined with virtual reality (VR) to train doctors, medical practitioners without the need for a real patient.

Dr M Manivannan said in the traditional method, mannequins would be used for training people in CPR. In the VR method, visual information would be used to influence haptic (sense of touch) perception in the presence of forced signals, which would be relevant to hand eye co-ordination useful for CPR training. “Mannequin-based training systems are not realistic, and the cost increases significantly as the reliability of the mannequin increases. VR system provides a highly realistic visually-rich patient simulation for training at a lower cost,” he added.

Pointing out that there was a greater need for CPR simulators in the country as they were mostly imported, the professor of the biomedical engineering group said that they had come up with the VR mechanism six months ago and had been in talks with companies through their startup “Merkel Haptic Systems Private Limited” to commercial their product.

“The trainee gets trained in different scenarios, such as clinical, house and road side, using the VR model. The user will feel the chest of patients and gets trained on compression and revival of patients. VR system reduces the cost of the system significantly for mass training of public. We did field trials in a few hospitals in Chennai and have filed for patents,” he claimed. Dr Manivannan is also involved in developing projects like Neuro Surgery VR Simulator, laparoscopic VR simulator and Needle insertion VR simulator.
