Amma theatres to come up soon in two places in city

Full scale preparations are going on to open them before the local body elections which are due in three months. The corporation is planning to convert two of its meeting halls into theatres, one at Shenoy Nagar and another at T Nagar. 

The Shenoy Nagar hall is a huge one with a capacity of 3,000 seats and fully air-conditioned. Sir Pitti Thyagaraya Hall in T Nagar which is currently rented for public functions is also a fully air-conditioned hall. Officials of the corporation discussed the next course of action with the mayor on Saturday. They will decide to convert the construction built with Rs 17.28 crore into a theatre and the Thiyagarayar Hall in T Nagar as well. 

The entrance fee for the theatres will be decided by the government and will be around Rs 10, 20 and 30 to enable the poorer sections too to get an opportunity to view films as they may not afford to visit other theatres. The corporation will also identify empty lands to construct more Amma theatres in the city. A vacant land owned by TNHB of 3.94 acres at Mogappair East Padi will be considered for this purpose, it is learnt. Similarly, the Chetpet central asphalt unit has some land which may be selected for a theatre.
