    70 per cent rly cases detected: IGP

    Nearly 70 per cent of the cases registered by the Railway Police have been solved and 60 per cent of stolen property recovered in the last two months, Inspector General, Railways, M Ramasubramani said here on Friday.

    Four persons were booked under the Goondas Act.  “In the last two months alone, 101 sovereigns of gold jewels were recovered,” he said. Speaking on the sidelines of a function to distribute cash awards and meritorious certificates to Government Railway police (GRP) personnel for their good work while on duty, Ramasubramani said the government was very keen on curbing offences taking place on board trains and at a total 517 railway stations in the railway divisions between Tiruchy and Madras. 

    A study was being conducted for installing CCTV cameras in major stations to start with. “Along with GRP, the Railway Protection Force is involved in the process, and the important stations would have CCTV cameras before December,” he said. In 2016, out of five theft cases involving offer of sedative laced eatables, four had been detected so far, he said.  “As part of major crime prevention activity, four persons were booked under the Goondas Act while one each was booked in the years 2013, 2014 and 2015. He gave away cash awards and meritorious certificates to 40 GRP personnel. Railway Superintendent (Tiruchy division) Annie Vijaya was also present at the function.
