Sources said that there was a grocery shop on the ground floor while the rest was used by the textile shop in the firehit complex. On Tuesday, the shop was shut at 11 pm. Close to midnight, thick smoke billowed out from the first floor. The security guard who noticed it, immediately informed the fire and rescue department. Fire tenders and a team of personnel from Tenkasi station rushed to the spot and tried to put out the blaze. But their efforts were hampered by strong winds.

More fire engines summoned

Meanwhile, the fire spread to the entire building. As the situation was going out of control, 10 more fire engines from Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli town, Pavoorchatram, Surandai and other places were summoned to the spot. Finally, the fire was doused after a battle for several hours. Since the fire accident took place in the night hours, there was no casualty reported.

Investigation on

However, the goods and other articles in the shop were completely destroyed. Tenkasi police have registered a case and are investigating whether the incident was caused by the perpetrators or due to inflammable articles kept inside the shop. The fireproof measures undertaken are also being probed, police said.
