Though work is in progress in 11 divisions of the urban body’s limits, many arterial roads like Poonamallee High Road, Anna Salai, Kaliamman Koil Street and Jawaharlal Nehru Road were water-logged during the recent spell.

While the public have been facing severe inconvenience with the poor water flow system, Corporation officials defended themselves, saying that works to remove blockages were going on in full swing and would be completed soon. “It is a complete overhaul of the whole system that we have undertaken right now,” the officials said, and added that they are confident of completing the work soon.

“Setting right the stormwater drains alone will not help. Officials should periodically inspect to maintain the system in right shape. Otherwise, the city will face a repeat of December,” opined S Mohanram, a city based social activist. When contacted, Saidai Duraisamy, Mayor, said that the urban body had already allocated adequate funds to augment the stormwater drains in the city.  “We will inspect all the places and clear blockages, wherever necessary, to ensure free flow of rainwater and prevent inundation of roads and low lying areas,” the Mayor assured.
