Mutton sale touches new high in Tiruchy for Ramzan

The festival of Ramzan seems incomplete without the traditional mutton biryani and delicacies. To keep the price under control and to cater to the growing demand for the meat, the district wholesalers of mutton have decided to increase the number of goats to be slaughtered this year.

Sellers say that the consumption of mutton has risen by at least 35 per cent in 2016 compared to the year before. To maintain a standard price for the meat, more number of goats will be needed.
According to traders, around 10,000 goats will be consumed this Ramzan in Tiruchy against last year’s consumption of 6,800 goats. During the rest of the year, the number of goats consumed in the district tend to be around 1,000 on weekdays, while the number goes up to 1,600 on Sundays. Serpentine queues of customers waiting to procure mutton are a common sight at meat shops and hypermarkets even late in the evenings these days.
P Abdul Ajeez, the State Vice President and District President of Mutton Stall Owner’s Association tells DTNext , “The goats are kept on reserve, and based on the demand for meat, they are slaughtered.”
Meanwhile, the traditional slaughter house situated near Gandhi Market, run by the City Corporation saw brisk sales on Wednesday on the eve of Ramzan. Though several people have already ordered for the meat in advance to avoid last minute spike in prices, the retail shops would have steady sales this time, said the traders.
“The plain meat is sold at Rs 500 to 540 while meat with bones sold at Rs 460. The rate is fixed and we do not hike the price when the demand is high”, Ajeez said and added that there is no extra price for ‘halal’ meat.
The goats reared in Tiruchy, Dindigul, Namakkal and Perambalur are sold here. “Mostly people do not prefer lamb meat which has a different taste. So we purchase goats reared locally. We have regular customers, so we are very careful in selection of goats,” Ajeez sums up.
