Swathi case shifts back to Chennai

Suspect in Swathi murder case, Ramkumar, who had attempted suicide in his village when Tirunelveli police were set to apprehend him in Meenakshipuram near Tirunelveli, and was admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TMCH) late on Friday night, was shifted to Chennai by a special ambulance, on Sunday evening.

Two drivers took turns in bringing Ramkumar to the State capital. Two doctors and a medical technician accompanied Ramkumar who attempted to slit his neck when cornered by the police in his village. The vehicle was sandwiched between six police vehicles. Nungambakkam Assistant Commissioner, KPS Devaraj, and his team accompanied the ambulance in one of the police jeeps. Doctors handed over a medical certificate to the police team from Chennai in order to shift Ramkumar and based on the certificate, the special ambulance was readied. 

Earlier, Judicial Magistrate Ramadoss conducted enquiries with Ramkumar at the hospital in the afternoon and after 20 minutes, he ordered that Ramkumar should be produced before the 14th Metropolitan Magistrate in Egmore within 24 hours. Sources at TMCH said Ramkumar was interrogated in the morning and a statement regarding the murder was obtained from him. KPS Devaraj, VAOs Mailerum Perumal and Jeeyarajan, and Inspector Chidambara Bharathi, were present while recording the statement of Ramkumar.  

Later, one of the VAOs said that Ramkumar, in his statement, had stated that he knew Swathi via Facebook and had proposed to her thrice directly. But she had refused his proposal citing his personal appearance and his dressing sense. On the day of the murder, he had gone to propose to her again but since she had once again refused to accept him, he assaulted her brutally he said. Ramkumar also claimed that he came to know of Swathi’s death only through the media and decided to returne home the same night Meanwhile, Devaraj and his team searched Ramkumar’s house at Meenakshipuram near Shenkottah and seized Swathi’s mobile phone. The team also found the bus ticket he had obtained for travel from Chennai to Tenkasi. The team also seized some of the engineering books used by Ramkumar to clear his arrears in engineering.

Student killed in Kovilpatti

A 19-year old college student was murdered at Kovilpatti, on Saturday, and two persons have been arrested. Abdullah, a college student, was chatting with two of his friends, when a duo reached the spot, hacked Abdullah and fled. Kovilpatti East Police investigated the crime. 

Based on the information provided by Abdullah’s friends, police nabbed Mandhiramoorthy and his brother Kanagaraj. A petty, previous dispute between the deceased and the attacker was the reason for the attack, said police.
