A division bench comprising Justices K K Sasidharan and B Gokuldas on June 23 directed the Centre to a file a status report on steps taken by it to rescue of 30-year-old S Megala and 13 other women, who went to Oman to work as maids and reportedly subjected to torture by their employee. The direction came based on a Habeas Corpus petition filed by Megala’s mother K Kalavathi (48) of Jaihindapuram in Madurai. The judges also directed Assistant Solicitor General G R Swaminathan to take notice on behalf of the Union External Affairs Ministry and obtain necessary report.

Swaminathan on Wednesday informed the Madurai Bench that the Centre was holding talks with officials of Oman embassy to rescue the women and bring them back to India. Accepting the status report, the judges directed the Centre to file a detailed counter and posted the petition to July 12 for further hearing.
