Third advocate hacked to death in three weeks

The city witnessed the third murder of an advocate in three weeks when Ravi was murdered in Vyasarpadi on Wednesday. The attack led to tension in the area and many shops downed shutters.

The advocate was hacked to death in the busy area in peak traffic, when commuters were on their way to work. A four-member gang, armed with sharp weapons followed the advocate. On seeing them coming after him, Ravi tried to run to safety. However, the gang chased him, caught up with him and hacked him several times. As news spread of the attack, Ravi’s friends and relatives surrounded his body and prevented police from removing it from the spot. Over 700 people put up a road blockade, raised slogans and demanded the arrest of the killers. 

Deputy Commissioner Mayilvaganan, Assistant Commissioner Mannar Mannan and other police personnel held negotiations with Ravi’s wife and others in the crowd, assuring them of prompt action against the killers. The body was finally removed to the government hospital nearly two and a half hours after the attack. 

Most of shops in the vicinity were closed and traffic was diverted. Ravi, a resident of Vyasarpadi Mckensy Nagar was said to be running the Ambedkar Revolutionary Front. Earlier he was active with Poovai Murthy’s Puratchi Bharatham Party, but left it to start his own outfit. Long-time residents of the area said Vyasarpadi witnessed frequent clashes between gangs but these incidnets had come down of late. Police said investigations were underway.
