MK warns Centre of another uprising if Sanskrit is imposed

Cautioning the Centre of another uprising in Tamil Nadu on the lines of the anti-Hindi stir of the past if attempts were made to impose Sanskrit, DMK president and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Monday said each and every Tamil should oppose the move tooth and nail.

Speaking at a marriage function here, he said the Centre should stop its intentions to impose Sanskrit in the state, failing which there would be revolution in the state, similar to the anti-Hindi agitation of the past. “No one should be responsible to create such a revolution in Tamil Nadu,” warned. “If any one tries to impose Sanskrit, they will be driven out,” Karunanidhi said, adding that no language other than Tamil would be allowed in the state. “If the Centre insists that it would not accord importance to Tamil and give priority to Sanskrit language, each and every Tamil should take a whip in their hands to root them out.”

No room for Sanskrit in TN

He said everyone should take a pledge that they would not allow any North Indian language to dominate in the state and that there was no room for Sanskrit in Tamil Nadu. Karunanidhi’s strong comments come in the wake of criticisms from both AIADMK and BJP over the DMK patriarch’s accusation of how BJP-led government in the Centre was thrusting Sanskrit into Tamil Nadu in order to spread Hindutva movement.

AIADMK mouthpiece Dr Namadhu MGR on Sunday caricatured Karunanidhi and reproduced his views asking how the Centre could go ahead in promoting Hindi and Sanskrit. Seeking to mock the party for using Hindi selectively, the caricature had in the backdrop a poster put up by DMK during an election in chaste Hindi. A cartoon of a DMK worker was also depicted asking Karunanidhi how he “sang a Hindi song” during a previous Lok Sabha poll to seek support for party candidate Dayanidhi Maran, his grandnephew.

    BJP calls it opportunism

BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan on Saturday hit out at Karunanidhi for criticising the Centre for its move to set up a board of Vedic education and charged him with indulging in politics in the name of language. She also had asked, “Can you (Karunanidhi) deny that your party posters in Hindi were pasted in areas dominated by North Indians (during polls)? Can you deny this is brazen opportunism?
