Fresh demand for memorial at Vanchi

Social activists and enthusiasts have renewed their long-pending demand to construct a memorial for freedom fighter Vanchinathan at Vanchimaniyachi railway station where he shot the then Tirunelveli Collector, Ash, to death moments before killing himself in 1911.

Activists said that the Maniyachi incident made Vanchinathan known to the entire world and a memorial at Vanchimaniyachi station would be meaningful. Though their demand has always fallen on deaf ears, they don’t want to give up.

Ilasai Maniyan of Bharathi Research Centre, Ettayapuram, who had long been involved in the fight for memorial, said that the murder of Ash was the only political murder of British official in the Southern Indian during the freedom struggle and the act of Vanchinathan had kindled the flames of freedom movement in the farthest corners.

“It is sad that such a freedom fighter does not have a memorial or at least a statue in Maniyachi station. Every year Vanchinathan is remembered at the railway station in a grand manner only by the individuals and no step is taken by the government in this regard.” He said that June 17, the day which he shot ash, should be celebrated as government function with all the honours.

“A memorial with all the photos, relevant materials and statue should be constructed at the same railway station and a chapter on Vanchinathan should be included in the text books demanded,” Ilasai Maniyan demanded.
