Rare kidney swap surgery in Madurai
A rare kidney swap surgery was performed in a hospital here recently and the patients are said to be recovering well. This is done in a case where a blood group of a donor and recipient in a family does not match and hence they look forward to another family with the same blood group who are also willing to be a donor and a recipient.

Madurai
The blood group of donor of first family should be the same as that of recipient of the second family and similarly the blood group of the donor of the second family should be the same as that of recipient of the first family. In that case the kidneys will be transplanted across the families after proper approval. The surgery is rare just because finding donors and recipients with the same blood group across two families is not an easy task.Â
Dr Palaniraj, Â speaking to DTNext , claimed that a 24-year-old engineering graduate was suffering from kidney failure and was under dialysis for three years. Though his aunt came forward to be a donor, her blood group did not match.
Similarly, a 50-year-old person from Villupuram suffered from kidney failure and his wife came forward to be a donor. The blood group did not match. But in a rare case the blood group of the engineering graduate and the wife of the 50-year-old man matched and the blood group of the 50- year-old man and the aunt of the engineering graduate matched.Â
The kidney from the wife of the 50-year-old man was transplanted to the engineering graduate and the kidney of the aunt of the engineering graduate was transplanted to the 50-year-old man. Both the donors have recovered and will be discharged in a day or two. The patients are progressing well and it will take another week for them to get discharged. The swap surgery is a typical two kidney transplant surgeries done consecutively.Â
The swap surgery took around eight hours, claimed Palaniraj. He claimed that another set of donors and recipients were getting ready in the same hospital for a kidney swap surgery and this would be done shortly. Those who thought that their life would end with dialysis despite having a donor would get a new lease of life with this swap surgery, according to Palaniraj.
