Jaya thanks PM for Metro Rail extension

In a demi-official letter to the PM, the Chief Minister said the approval to the proposal would enable Metro Rail services to be provided to the densely populated neighbourhoods of Northern Chennai. 

The Union Cabinet gave approval to the proposal to extend Corridor I of Phase I of the Chennai Metro Rail Project from Washermanpet to Tiruvotriyur/Wimco Nagar covering a further 9.51 kms at a cost of Rs 3,770 crore. “It is the intention of my government to promote public transport of various forms including Metro Rail to ensure that the share of public transportation in Chennai city is substantially increased. 

As you are aware, I had inaugurated the operations of Chennai Metro Rail on June 29, 2015,” she said, adding that the establishment of Metro Rail in Chennai was originally conceived of in 2003. Jayalalithaa also thanked the Prime Minister for making a special allocation of food grains for a period of three months from April to June 2016 for Tamil Nadu in keeping with the state’s request to continue such special allocations.
