Several students studying higher education in government colleges and universities in the state demand uniform fees for revaluation of answer scripts across institutions. They also seek to keep the fee to a minimum to enable students from all kinds of background to go for revaluation of their papers.

Currently, the revaluation fee varies for each university. While a student studying in a college attached to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, needs pay Rs 325 per paper for revaluation, Anna University, Chennai, charges Rs 700 (Rs 300 to provide photocopy of student’s answer sheet and Rs 400 for revaluation of the answer script). 
Whereas candidates studying colleges affiliated to University of Madras have to make a payment of Rs 1,000. Students’ Federation of India’s (SFI) Tamil Nadu state secretary P Uchimakali said that universities should fix lesser amount as fee for revaluation and not look into ways to make it an additional income. He urged the state government to direct all universities to fix uniform fees for revaluation. 
“Several students from poor economic and middle income group study in government and its aided colleges, who struggle even to pay the annual course fee and exam fee. So keeping them in mind, the government should charge a minimum amount for revaluation,” a student of a private college in the city said. 
Dr J Gandhiraj, treasurer of the Association of University Teachers (AUT) and member of the Madras University Senate, pointed out that several students from poor economic background face lot of hardships to pay their tuition fees, when situation is so bad, how could they pay more for revaluation. Asked for his comments, Madras University Registrar Dr P David Jawahar said that they had planned for reforms in revaluation. “If the revaluation works in favour of the student, the fee could be refunded.”
