When a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by NGO, Change India Director A Narayanan came up for hearing before the First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay

Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan, the government said the schools were granted time till June 30 to fulfil the guidelines recommended by the expert committee.

The Bench accepted it and adjourned the matter for further hearing on July 19 and asked the government to take a decision before that.

As the 746 schools reportedly failed to meet the standards of government, their temporary recognition was cancelled.

The Government during the earlier hearing in March, submitted that the temporary conditional recognition granted to 746 matric schools till May 31 this year was

a one-time measure and there was no chance for further extension.

Narayanan, in his PIL, had sought to quash a GO dated August 18, 2015 of the School Education Secretary and consequently to forbear the authorities from granting recognition to the 746 unrecognised schools, not fulfilling the norms specified in GO's dated July 21, 2004, September 14, 2004, September 14, 2005 and August 10, 2006 and the judgement of the Supreme Court.

The petitioner wanted to ensure that all unrecognised schools were closed by the end of the academic year 2015-16 and the students transferred to government or government-aided or unaided schools to help them continue their education.
