Decision a boon for us, says community leader

Hailing the Scheduled Tribe status given by the Centre to the Narikurava community, members of the community said they would get legal protection and the decision would help raise their status in life through the reservation in education, employment and self-employment and getting subsidised loans.

“This categorisation will primarily help our children to get education in premier institutions as the reservation rule would be strictly followed and seats will be filled with our community people,” S Mahendran, Founder-secretary of Narikuravar Education and Welfare Society (NEWS) told DT Next

He said there were about 55,000 members especially in Tiruchy, Pudukkottai, Perambalur, Karur, Namakkal and a few places in Chennai. Most of them were in their traditional business of making chains with beads. However, their business was restricted to a certain scale as they were being given only a small amount as loan. “With this announcement, we are eligible to get group loan up to Rs 50 lakh with which we can expand our business that has a good response even abroad,” Seetha Mahendran said.

The community people, mostly nomads, are elated by the announcement. “There are children who have scored good marks in schools but are unable to compete in the regular MBC quota and so they are not given chance to pursue courses in premier institutions,” Mahendran whose daughter has completed BE in a private college in Tiruchy said.
