With the opposition party DMK entering the Assembly with strong numbers, it is reliably learnt that the party has planned to put the AIADMK government in a spot on this right from the beginning.

Informed sources told DT Next that DMK leader MK Stalin, who is set to be the Leader of the Opposition is likely to move a Private Member’s Bill in the assembly for establishing Lokayukta in the state.

DMK sources also pointed out that they had already prepared Lokayukta draft model bill with the hope that they will be voted to power. “Now we are planning to introduce the same draft model bill as Private Member’s Bill,” the source said.

According to him, though Private Member’s Bill rarely becomes law, this one is different as it will expose whether the AIADMK is intent on establishing the anti-corruption ombudsman or not. “This will be a ‘heads I win, tails you lose’ strategy by DMK,” he said and added that the DMK is committed to get it passed in the assembly at the earliest.

The Private Member’s Bill introduced by a legislator, who is not a member of the cabinet is mostly ignored by the ruling government, with many not even coming up for discussion. The party is also hopeful that such a move will give a further boost to the image of DMK’s treasurer and is seen as a continuance of Stalin’s popular ‘Namakku Naame’ campaign.

According to the source, DMK’s legal wing is polishing the final draft of the bill. “Irrespective of the outcome of this move, this will only result in image boost for our party and more so for Stalin,” he added. It may be noted that even during his recent campaign for the deferred Aravakurichi election, Stalin pitched for Lokayukta.

Meanwhile, civil society groups such as Arappor Iyakkam that had campaigned for the Lokayukta and the public are waiting with bated breath to see whether an announcement was being made on this during the swearing-in ceremony on Monday.

It may be noted that V Jayaram, Convener of Arappor Iyakkam warned earlier that if the new government is hesitant to set up Lokayukta, they will organise a social movement to pressurise the government.
