Terrorising the local public in areas like Mehasinpuram, Mallikapoo Colony and Kalyanapuram, an armed gang that came on two-wheelers with faces covered, unleashed violence on members of public on the street without any provocation.

The gang members hacked nine men who were on the street, shopping, walking back home or just standing on the road side. The incident took place around 10 pm on Saturday. The gang members escaped from the scene on their two-wheelers.

Police suspect the gang carried out the attack either to scare the public or behaved capriciously under the influence of alcohol. Police are investigating whether the gang had any other motive as the attack happened a few days ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of the new government.

The locals tried to chase and catch the assailants but in vain. Sources said that some of them were caught by New Washermanpet Police. Police have picked up seven persons and are questioning them. They have not yet recorded the arrest of the youth. Police are said to have seized some weapons from the gang.

“They attacked ordinary people who were just there on the street. A school teacher, a student who was walking on the road and several other pedestrians suffered deep cut injuries on their neck, chest and hands. We have taken some youth into custody” a police official said.
