Police, which had been put on high alert following intelligence inputs regarding possible trouble over the victory of AIADMK in the Assembly election, deployed heavy battalions in sensitive areas, as celebrations continued till late night on Thursday.

However, except for a minor clash at Kotturpuram between DMK and AIADMK cadres over bursting fire crackers as part of victory celebrations, no major violence was reported in the city. Two persons suffered injuries in the clash at Kotturpuram and police soon brought the things under control there.

Police sources said a large contingent of policemen were deployed at Poes Garden as senior bureaucrats, police officials and party leaders rushed in to greet and congratulate AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa. Police had a tough time controlling the common party cadre, who had gathered to get a glimpse of their leader.
