The incident took place in the wee hours of Saturday when AIADMK councillor for 28th ward, Chandra and her family were sleeping in their house at Shanmugapuram in Thoothukudi. The family woke up on hearing a loud explosion, and they rushed out and realised that the front door was on fire. Chandra and her family members brought the fire under control.

Some members also rushed out of the house to see if anyone was there on the street but they did not see anyone. The police were called, and they inspected the house and carried out investigation.

Even as the investigation was underway, there was another similar incident in the same locality. The house of 28th ward AIADMK Secretary, Ramesh Kannan was also attacked with bottles and during the incident, the window panes of his house were broken.

Thoothukudi MLA, ST Chellapandian, who is also the AIADMK candidate for Thoothukudi, visited both the houses and condemned the incidents.

Sources at Shanmugapuram claimed that on Friday night there was dispute between the AIADMK and DMK during the parties’ campaigns in the area and they feel that political rivalry could be behind the attacks. The investigations are underway.
