AIADMK government failed to keep promise on Tamizh Thai statue in Madurai: Karunanidhi
What happened to the Rs 100-crore ‘Tamizh Thai’ statue in Madurai promised by AIADMK government, asked DMK leader Karunanidhi on Tuesday.

Madurai
Addressing an election rally in Madurai, Karunanidhi pointed out that the AIADMK government promised to instal a statue for ‘Tamizh Thai’ at a cost of Rs 100 crore in Madurai, but, it did not keep its word even after five years of its rule. “Where is the statue and what happened to the fund allotted for it”, asked Karunanidhi.
When the announcement for construction of the statue was made, there was excitement among Tamil scholars, public and in some section of the media. But, the announcement remained only on paper and no one seemed to fulfil the promise, charged the DMK president.
Though there was no word on the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP) in the DMK manifesto, the Dravidian patriarch assured that if his party was voted to power, it would make sincere efforts to complete the project.
The Dravidian patriarch said, “If the SSCP is completed, it will augur well for the southern districts and usher in rapid industrial growth thus generating a lot of employment opportunities.”
Jawahirullah scores
When Manidhaneya Makkal Katchi founder MH Jawahirullah drew a big applause when he started his speech by referring to Karunanidhi as ‘a 93-year-old youth’. Launching a scathing attack on the AIADMK government, the MMK leader alleged that none of the schemes announced under the Rule 110 were implemented.
To substantiate his claim, he questioned why the Madurai-Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram-Thoothukudi industrial corridor projects have not been executed so far.
Sixty-three candidates from the nine southern districts were introduced by Karunanidhi during the meeting.
