Campaigning for road safety
Ahead of the Global Road Safety Week, that is observed from May 4 to May 10 every year, Radhakirshnan, founder of Thozhan, speaks about the NGO’s activities aimed at creating road safety awareness through various campaigns

How have Thozhan campaigns been effective in creating awareness among people?
We have already done around 2,300 campaigns. There has been a drastic increase in awareness among people. The campaign started with four people initially leading to the volunteers of 1,400. Massive campaigns at major traffic intersections has helped in saving harmless lives. Our achievement is when the commuters pledge to follow rules. Statistics have shown an extreme reduction in road accidents due to awareness.
What innovative methods did Thozhan has implement for the awareness?
The organisation conducts mime shows, street plays portraying the significance of wearing a helmet, seat belts and the outcome of over speeding and rash driving. We conduct seminars and thought-provoking activities in educational institutions.
How do you create awareness on jumping signals?
Many accidents have been recorded due to sudden switch to amber lights and proper scanning methods to track vehicles that jump signals. We have formed the idea of automated signals and e-challan rules for commuters and forwarded it to government officials.
