Long power cuts: EB denies grid failure

At a time when the poll campaign is in full swing, power cut has returned to haunt people in most parts of the city. Many areas reported a power breakdown lasting up to four hours on Saturday which EB sources said was due to snapping of an overhead line. But, residents felt there was a grid failure which the board was not ready to confirm.

Residents complained that they had to sweat it out as they went through a long power cut particularly during night time. While the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) maintain that there is enough supply and breakdown seldom takes place due to technical snags either in sub-divisions.

Sources said that most areas in the city of late witnessed power shutdown for three to four hours.

Still worse, some areas like Madipakkam, Chitlapakkam, Selaiyur and S Kulathur witness severe low voltage problem in the recent past. TANGEDCO was finding it difficult to maintain supply to all the areas at this juncture as supply fell short of demand.

“We are facing the worst situation as there is a power cut for four hours in recent days. Further, summer is adding to the woes and whenever we contact the Electricity Board (EB) personnel, they simply say that it is due to some technical failure in transformer,” said A Manikandan, a resident of Pallavaram.
