The families of two accident victims — Dayanithi, a 27-year-old man from Chengalpattu, and Jayakumar, a 57-year-old man from Puducherry — made the courageous decision to donate their organs, after they were declared brain dead by doctors at Global Hospitals on Wednesday.
Upon consent from the families, on Thursday, doctors harvested Dayanithi’s vital organs — kidneys, liver, heart and lungs. Jayakumar’s liver, kidneys, heart valves and corneas were donated to suitable recipients.
Talking to DT Next, Dr V Chandrasekaran, Head of Department, Nephrology, Global Hospitals, said, “According to rules laid down by transplant authority, harvested organs like kdineys have to be shared between hospitals. The kidneys of both donors were therefore shared between Global, Billroth and Fortis Malar.”
V Bhaskar Reddy, VP, corporate relations, commended the families for volunteering to donate the organs of their loved ones. “We often see cases of road accidents on OMR and ECR. However, it is not often that we have two cases of brain deaths on the same day. It was extremely brave of the families to consent for donating the organs. They have saved many lives,” he added.
