City school mulls chip-based ID card to mark attendance
The Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram, one of the first schools in the city to adopt technology in educational management, has now chosen to implement Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) cards to record student attendance from Classes 1 to 12 from the coming academic year. Teachers will also be covered.

Several schools have been following the traditional practice of calling out names of students to take note of their attendance.
J. Ajeeth Prasath Jain, senior principal of Bha van’s Rajaji Vidyashram, said: “The new attendance system will be implemented for over 3,000 students from Classes 1 to 12. We were the first school in Chennai to introduce new technologies in school education several years ago.” When a student enters or leaves the school campus the RFID reader installed in the entry and exit points will automatically recognise the student’s ID card, embedded with RFID chip and mark his/her attendance. If a student does not come to school within the permitted time he will be marked absent and parents will automatically get an SMS from the school computer server. Administrators and teachers can check student’s attendance online.
With the implementation of the RFID card system the school administrators can analyse class-wise attendance and comparative attendance between classes on daily basis.
Jain also said that from the coming academic year teachers would upload their lesson plan for the week or a month onto the school’s dedicated website. Once the teachers complete the lessons as per plan they would post homework and assignments for the completed portion online. Teachers would get informed when a particular threshold limit had been exceeded for a given day.
