With Gmail being one of the most popular modes of communication, the Google Doodle is a cannot-be-missed information tool. The Google-powered YouTube will be the other platform that will come into play, calling upon voters to go out and get themselves inked. Between May 1 and May 16, mobile phone users in Tamil Nadu will be treated to no fewer than three advertisements on YouTube, when they log in.
Google will be partnering with path-breaking initiatives undertaken by the State Election Commission, which is aiming at 100 per cent voter participation in the electoral process on May 16.
Tamil Nadu’s Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni confirmed to DT Next that YouTube watchers in Tamil Nadu will be treated to a minimum of three advertisements. “All users in the state can view these ads,” he said. “We are doing everything possible to make an impression upon young voters, and achieve maximum turnout on polling day,” he said.
In the 2011 Assembly election, the state registered 78% voting. The state has around 5.67 crore voters, out of which around one lakh are first-time voters. It is this new voter segment that is the primary target of the Election Commission’s drive which saw it come out with the hashtag #TNElection100percent.
The EC already harnessed star power in its campaign. Actors such as Suriya, sports icons like Ashwin have already featured as ‘brand ambassadors’, carrying the message on why people should vote. Its memes, Twitter campaigns and other social media posts became a huge hit with young people everywhere. Online and social media apart, the EC has not forgotten traditional platforms such as bus shelters and other public spaces.
