Dindigul district was carved out of Madurai district in September 1985. Bound by Coimbatore and Karur on the North, Sivaganga and Tiruchy Districts on the East, Madurai district on the South and Theni and Coimbatore districts and Kerala state on the West, the district comprises three Revenue divisions, eight taluks and 14 panchayat unions. The sex ratio of Dindigul is 998 whereas the literacy rate is 76.26 per cent as per 2011 Census. With a flourishing handloom industry at Chinnalapatti, the art silk saris and Sungudi saris produced here are famous throughout India and beyond. Out of 554 NOTA registered here in 2011, Dindigul constituency had polled the maximum (217) while the least number was recorded in Athoor constituency (19).

It’s a DMK fort with seven wins in 11 elections. Sakkarapani (DMK) is a four-time consecutive MLA here from 1996 elections and has been given seat to contest 2016 election too. Winning parties: DMK (2011), DMK (2006), DMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and ADK (1984).

Polling percentage: 79%

Margin: 24,714 votes
AS Ponnammal was a four-time MLA of this constituency in 1980 (as an independent), 1989, 1991 (as an INC candidate) and 1996 (as a TMC candidate). Winning parties: PT (2011), AIADMK (2006), ADMK (2001), TMC (1996), INC (1991), INC (1989) and ADK (1984).

Senior Congress leader Andi Ambalam was a six-time consecutive MLA from 1977 to 1996 and after his demise R Vishwanathan won four times consecutively from 1999 (by-election) to 2011. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), AIADMK (2006), ADMK (2001), ADMK (1999 By Polls), TMC (1996), INC (1991), INC (1989), INC (1984), INC (1980 and 1977).

Polling percentage: 76.85%
Winner: Balabharathi K (CPM)
Runner-up: Paul Baskar J (PMK)
Margin: 39,115 votes
CPM’s Balabharathi got 58.82 % votes in 2011 election. CPM party had performed well here with six wins in 12 elections so far. The constituency will experience VVPAT facility in EVMs this time. Winning parties: CPM (2011), CPM (2006), CPM (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), CPM (1989) and ADK (1984).

Margin: 50,712 votes
From the 1971 elections, the winning party of the constituency has been forming the state government. VP Balasubramanian of ADK was a two-time MLA of the constituency. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), INC (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), ADK (1980 and 1984).
