A few animal activists have announced a reward of Rs 10,000 to whoever can provide information about a litter of Pomeranian puppies killed and dumped in the Porur lake. Last Friday (April 15), a few animal lovers found two adult Pomeranians and five puppies massacred: activists thought that they could have been poisoned.

“When we saw the puppies, there was spoilt milk spilling out of their mouth. We feel that someone had poisoned the mother, who was nurturing them and the pups died after drinking the milk,” says animal activist, Dinesh Baba, who is following-up on the case. The final post-mortem report is yet to come. An FIR was also filed with the Porur SRMC police station.

“These puppies were found around 6.15 pm and they were taken to a private veterinary clinic since it was already too late. Only on Sunday, we went to the Vepery Veterinary Hospital. The result will be out only after a week, following which the legal action will be taken,” says Ravi Kumar, another animal activist. Several incidents of cruelty against the four-legged have been occurring, the most horrific one being the recent instance of the woman in Bengaluru who thrashed eight puppies to death to teach their mother a lesson.

Around the same time, a CCTV camera captured footage of a man in Delhi stabbing three puppies. “We keep coming across such incidents of brutality. Around two years ago, there was an incident of mass killings of dogs in Mogappair in the city.

A case was filed, but nothing was done beyond that. There needs to be a tough law against animal cruelty and strict punishment must be given to the guilty, who, most of the time, get away with it,” says Dinesh, who, along with Ravi, Beena Mathanmohan and Kamal Banger have decided to take this fight further.

“It is one of the most gruesome acts of violence we have seen and we want those guilty to be nabbed. We have decided to spend money from our own pockets to offer as reward for anyone who has any information about the puppies or their owner,” says Dinesh.
