Post puts its stamp on going digital
An online initiative will help you ‘know your postman’. India Post will also start issuing ATM cards in sub post offices in the city.

Chennai
The Chennai city region (CCR) of India Post will extend the ‘Know your postman’ online initiative to over 30 major post offices in three months’ time and the others before the end of the year.
“It was CCR that, for the first time in the country, launched the online list of postmen and women two years ago, giving details of postmen and women in head post offices,” says Mervin Alexander, Postmaster general (CCR region). “This helps people get to know the postal staff who deliver post at the doorstep and the jurisdiction they cover, besides helping you write the correct pincode on the letter.”
He also points out that while account holders in head post offices in Chennai can currently use ATM services, India Post will soon start issuing ATM cards to customers with accounts in sub post offices in Chennai which have more customers than head post offices.
India Post has also launched a pilot project of providing handheld devices to postal staff for various operations in Alwar, Rajasthan as part of the Rural Information Communication Technology (RICT) initiative, Alexander says. The same pilot project will be launched in Vellore too in this financial year. “The handheld device will have added features like finger print reader and a small camera. This will enable services like money orders, savings bank operations and money remittances at the customers’ doorstep,” he points out.
