Tiruvannamalai district

District details

Tiruvannamalai was part of North Arcot district since independence until it was carved out in October 1989 to be made an individual district. The other part became Vellore district. The district has boundaries as Kancheepuram on east, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri on west, Vellore on north and Villupuram on south.

The district has four municipalities and 10 town panchayats. Tiruvannamalai taluk leads with highest population of 23.61 per cent in the district whereas Kalasapakkam taluk constitutes only 4.97 per cent of district’s population. As of 2009, Tiruvannamalai is one among the six districts in the state considered as backward region and receiving funds for the same from Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).
