Residents gherao police team over rising theft cases

Generally, it is the cops who play the peacemaker in any protest issue. But, on Sunday, it was the turn of the police themselves to face an agitation by the public when they went for an investigation in a burglary case to a house in Ice House at Triplicane.

Sources said that a group of residents prevented the Triplicane Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) from visiting the locality, raised slogans against the cops, alleging that the police were not initiating any action even after a series of burglaries in Ice House.

Protestors claimed that as many as 20 house break-ins have been reported in the Ice House limits in the last six months and police, till date have not taken any effective steps to prevent burglaries.

Following an assurance that investigation into burglary cases would be expedited, the residents withdrew their protest and allowed the police to visit the house of Faisal Ahamed (31), whose house was burgled on Sunday. Faisal’s house is located right opposite the Ice House police station, where 20 sovereigns of jewels, Rs 20,000 in cash and half a kg of silver were looted.

Some residents said it has been happening all over the area and finally, burglars had now thrown a challenge to the cops by targeting a house right in front of the Ice House police station. At least after the Sunday heist, will the police swing into action, the residents asked.
