District details
Vellore district, which accounts for more than 37 per cent of the country’s export of leather related products, has three major industrial estates — SIDCO in Katpadi and in Arakkonam and a SIPCOT in Ranipet. As far as the education institutions, it has 11 engineering colleges and 21 arts and science colleges apart from two universities. The district capital Vellore is also knows as Fort city and has a historical past. Out of 13 constituencies in the district, 8 seats were won by AIADMK candidates in the 2011 Assembly elections while its alliance partners won two more seats, leaving DMK front with only two wins. Out of 543 votes registered for 49(O) in the district, minimum was in Jolarpet at 7 and maximum in Arcot at 94. 
38. Arakkonam (SC)
Total No of voters: 1,80,053
Votes polled: 1,41,959
Polling percentage: 78.88% 
Winner: S Ravi (AIADMK)
Runner-up: S Sellapandian (VCK)
Margin: 26,237 votes
Since 1971, the assembly has been alternatively won by AIADMK and DMK except the 10th Assembly, which was won by Congress’ Lata Priyakumar. VK Raju of DMK was a three-time MLA in the constituency in 1977, 1984 and 1989. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), INC (1991), DMK (1989), DMK (1984).
39. Sholingur
Total No of voters: 2,11,864
Votes polled: 1,79,499
Polling percentage: 84.76% 
Winner: PR Manokar (DMDK)
Runner-up: AM Muniratinam (IND)
Margin: 9,038 votes
AM Munirathinam of Congress party was a three-time MLA in the constituency in 1989, 1991 and 1996. He contested in the 2011 election as an independent candidate and lost to DMDK’s PR Manokar by 9,000 votes. Winning parties: DMDK (2011), INC (2006), ADMK (2001), TMC (1996), INC (1991), INC (1989) and ADK (1984).
40. Katpadi 
Total No of voters: 1,90,456
Votes polled: 1,51,498
Polling percentage: 79.55% 
Winner: Duraimurugan (DMK)
Runner-up: Appu SRK (A) Radhakrishnan S (AIADMK)
Margin: 2,973 votes
Katpadi was a DMK fort with 7 wins in 12 elections. DMK’s Duraimurugan is a six-time MLA of the constituency, who managed to win consecutively from 1996 to 2011. Winning parties: DMK (2011), DMK (2006), DMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989), ADMK (1984) and CPI (1980).
41. Ranipet 
Total No of voters: 1,98,641
Votes polled: 1,57,749
Polling percentage: 79.44% 
Winner: A Mohammed John (AIADMK)
Runner-up: Gandhi R (DMK)
Margin: 14,201 votes
Independent candidate J Hassain won here in 1989, constesting against DMK and ADMK candidates successfully. Duraimurugan, a senior leader of DMK, was a two-time MLA in the constituency in 1977 and 1980. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), IND (1989) and INC (1984).
