Decision on alliance in a few days: TMC

Former Union Shipping Minister and Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) President GK Vasan on Tuesday said he would announce his decision on alliance for the May 16 Assembly election in the next couple of days.

Vasan’s announcement comes a day after the AIADMK announced the list of candidates, including the seats for its allies, for all the 234 seats indicating that there was no chance for an alliance with the TMC. Though the TMC was bargaining hard for decent number of seats with the AIADMK, there were also speculations that it was holding talks with the DMK as well. However, DMK treasurer Stalin denied any such move then and there itself.
The TMC has now only two options -- either to ally with the BJP, which had extended an invitation on Monday, or the five-party combine of PWF-DMDK. BJP State unit President Tamizhisai Soundararajan has openly said that her party would welcome TMC into the NDA fold.
In this scenario, Vasan, who held a meeting with his supporters here on Tuesday, was optimistic of entering into an alliance.
“We have been approached by political parties, including the PWF and BJP. A final decision will be announced in the next couple of days,” he added.
Vasan said after holding consultations with his party functionaries and workers, a right decision on alliance would be taken at the right time.
MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, who is also the coordinator of the PWF, had also said that the TMC was free to join the Front. After Party Founder GK Moopanar’s death in 2002, Vasan merged the TMC with the Congress. However, he revived the party in 2014 following differences of opinion with the Congress leadership again.
