TIRUVALLUR DISTRICT

District details: Tiruvallur, with 10 Assembly constituencies, is a border district with Andhra Pradesh and is considered an industrial belt carved out of Chengalpattu district in 1997. In the 2011 Assembly election, the ruling AIADMK made a near clean sweep of the district, by bagging seven seats, followed by its then ally DMDK which bagged two. CPM won the lone newly constituted Maduravoyal seat. The district’s high profile incumbent B V Ramana, once considered close to AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, was made minister but towards the end of the regime, removed from the cabinet of ministers. Ponneri, a reserved constituency, was in the news as it was declared a smart city. Avadi, Maduravoyal, Ambattur, carved out of Villivakkam constituency, and  Madhavaram were the newlyformed constituencies for the 2011 election.

1. Gummidipoondi

Total no of voters: 2,15,443

Votes Polled: 1,79,616

Polling percentage:  83.42% 

Winner: Sekar CH (DMDK)

Runner-up: Sekar KN (PMK)

Margin: 29,256 votes

An Industrial town. Gummidipoondi is a border city to Andhra Pradesh. R S Munirathinam of AIADMK won three consecutive times here in 1977, 1980 and 1984.

Winning Parties: DMDK (2011), AIADMK (2006), AIADMK (2001), DMK (1996), AIADMK (1991), DMK (1989)

2. Ponneri (SC) 

Total no of voters: 2,02,449

Votes Polled: 1,62,835

Polling percentage:  80.46%

Winner: Pon Raja (AIADMK)

Runner-up: A Manimekalai (DMK)

Margin: 31,270 votes

A proposed smart city in the district. Has sex ratio of 998 and 70.81% of literacy rate. 

Winning Parties: AIADMK (2011), AIADMK (2006), CPI (2001), DMK (1996), AIADMK (1991), DMK (1989)

3. Tiruttani (SC) 

Total no of voters: 2,36,733

Votes Polled: 1,91,251

Polling percentage:  80.79%

Winner: Arun subramaniam M (DMDK)

Runner-up: ESS Ramanan (INC)

Margin: 23,930 votes

A second grade municipality. Tiruttani taluk was carved out of Chittoor district of AP in 1960 and became part of Madras Presidency. 

Winning Parties: DMDK (2011), AIADMK (2006), PMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADMK (1991), DMK (1989)

4. Thiruvallur (SC) 

Total no of voters: 2,07,935 

Votes Polled: 1,70,115

Polling percentage:  82.08%

Winner: BV Ramana (AIADMK)

Runner-up: EAP Shiaji(DMK) 

Margin: 23,648 votes

The district headquarters. S Pattabiraman of AIADMK won three consecutive times here in 1977, 1980 and 1984.

5. Poonamallee (SC) 

Total no of voters: 2,29,460 

Votes Polled: 1,81,733

Polling percentage:  79.20% 

Winner: R Manimaran (AIADMK) 

Runner-up: Kanchi GV Mathiazhagan (INC)

Margin: 41,419 votes

The district headquarters. S Pattabiraman of AIADMK won three consecutive times here in 1977, 1980 and 1984. 

D Sudarsanam (INC and TMC) was a three time MLA of the constituency in 1991, 1996 and 2006.
